All organizations have very special defining- seminal- moments. Over twenty five years ago Wynlakes Golf and Country Club began as an idea to be the focal point of a residential community five miles outside of Montgomery’s Eastern Bypass. Activity levels and membership have exceeded our expectations. Jim Wilson, Jr., our visionary founder and developer, has continued to deliver world class facilities to our members as the eastern corridor flourishes. His operating philosophy is best characterized by a statement he made in February, 1992:
“I want the best chicken salad, for the best price, in the best possible surroundings.”
The “Wilson touch” can be exemplified in one word- quality. In 1999, we completed a $6.5M expansion of our clubhouse facilities. This expansion included state of the art fitness wing to the south; and a golf wing to the north. Today, Wynlakes’ fitness center serves as the most vibrant activity area of the club- over 70,000 visits annually. It features massage therapy, a barber shop, personal viewing stations, aerobics, cardio, and free weight areas.
Additional growth has been augmented with the addition of three lighted hard tennis courts (which compliment our 8 rubico courts) and sitter service for our young families.
On Memorial Day 2005, we opened our new “resort” pool. In just three short months we logged over 20,000 visits- double our best previous years! The pool has several unique components which differentiates us: five (5) cabanas; a “kids zone;” a zero entry pool; and a 20’ slide with 132’ flume. All kids, young and old, can enjoy a day in the sun at the Wynlakes pool. Summer of 2006 saw continued excitement at the pool. For the second successive year we had approximately 20,000 visitors. Our swim team continues to grow and Thursday family nights continue to be popular- especially when featuring "Dive-In" movies.
On September 20, 2006, Wynlakes celebrated its 20th Anniversary. To meet the growing demands of our 1000+ members and the migration to Montgomery's eastside, we opened our 27,000+ square foot Swan Ballroom on October 1. A number of large functions have already been conducted; with numerous weddings and large parties in the planning stages.
The Billy Fuller Re-designed golf course opened with a Gala Re-Opening on October 20, 2006. Over 200 participants enjoyed a day of golf, lunch, champagne toast, steak dinner and fireworks to launch the "new" golf course. Our owners, Jim Wilson III and Will Wilson, were on hand for the opening ceremony and ribbon cutting. A moment of silence, followed by three bag-pipers rendition of "Amazing Grace" paid tribute to our founder-Jim Wilson, Jr.-who passed away on September 21, 2006.
Jim Wilson, Jr.'s vision for a first-class private club located in a residential community is reality. His sense of relevancy, perspective, and the desire to do things right is unsurpassed. He cast a long shadow and his giant steps blazed a trail that few men will ever walk. Jim Wilson, Jr. was a difference maker; he will be missed.
Our facilities are poised for the future; our outstanding professional staff is motivated to serve the needs of all constituents. Yes, Wynlakes Golf and Country Club is ideally positioned for the robust growth that East Montgomery enjoys today. Our past has served us well; our future is bright. The Wynlakes family enjoys a wonderful spirit; a unique and eclectic persona, which makes the club better today and for our future generations.
